Angus’ Garden is a living memorial to Angus Macdonald, who was killed at the young age of 26 by Greek-Cypriot terrorist Nikos Sampson whilst working in Cyprus as a journalist in 1956 (he was, at the time, prospective parliamentary candidate for Argyll & Bute). Created a year later by Angus’ mother, Betty Macdonald, this nine-acre woodland garden was intended as a physical space symbolic of forgiveness and reconciliation.
Famous for its extensive collection of spring-flowering rhododendrons and azaleas, this glorious garden cleverly blends into the natural atmosphere of the landscape. Visitors can enjoy an informal network of paths, lined with spring flowering shrubs and bulbs, through native woodland and by shoreland whilst surrounded by magnificent views of Ben Cruachan and mountains of Glen Etive. This unspoilt, secluded setting attracts a wide range of wildlife, and the eleven-acre loch is home to swans and ducks. On the northwest side of the garden overlooking the loch stands “Betty’s Bell”, a tribute to her 40 years spent creating this magical garden.
The garden reaches its full glory between April and the end of June but is a place of special tranquillity and charm at all times of the year. There are three marked circular walks starting from the car park taking between 30 minutes and 1.5 hours (please note that these are unsuitable for wheelchairs).
Off A85 Crianlarich/Oban road at Taynuilt, turn onto Glen Lonan road, 3 miles up single track road, on right opposite Barguillean Farm.
